How Did I Lose The Baby Weight?

How Did I Lose The Baby Weight?

I definitely get asked this question on a daily, and I’m finally going to share with you some tips on how I managed to lose the baby weight. If you follow me on social media you’ve seen my transformation. It’s been quite a journey, and a tough one too. When you are pregnant your body is going through so many changes. You go 9 months preparing to give labor, and when you do your hormones and everything else is out of order. I wasn’t gorgeous pregnant, and to be honest, I felt like sh*t. Since I’m pretty small by month 7, I was miserable. I felt so happy to be carrying my son, but physically it took a toll on my body. I have minor scoliosis and that just worsened my back pain. There were moments where I couldn’t even get out of bed, and even walking was painful. I gained 50 pounds, and every time I went to the doctor I got an earful on how much weight I was gaining. I seriously don’t know how it happened, I wouldn’t eat terribly, but I think it was the water retention. My feet and legs were SUPER swollen to the point where I even got some little stretch marks on my calves from the weight gain. I was 130 pounds when I got pregnant, a little heavier than usual since we had just gotten back from a 3 week vacation in Spain. When I gave birth I was 180 pounds, today I am back to 130 pounds. I reached my goal about 2 months ago and have stayed and my current weight, but my goal is to lose 10 more pounds.

After giving birth, I felt like I was hit by a semi-truck. EVERYTHING hurt, and the lack of sleep, the breastfeeding schedule, the hormones did not help. Why doesn’t anyone talk about postpartum? I just can’t stand seeing all these celebs and even influencers give birth and make it seem like it’s all good. It makes other woman who may be going through the same thing think something is wrong with them when in reality it’s perfectly okay to struggle.

You endure a lot physically and emotionally. If you’re a first time mom it’s even worse because you’re welcomed into a whole new world, and although it’s completely beautiful being able to have a healthy baby, it’s also ok to feel overwhelmed. I had major anxiety postpartum and I had difficulties breastfeeding. It was tough, but guess what? All that is only temporary, after a few months it does get easier.

I didn’t start working out nor eating healthy right away because I wanted to:

  1. Enjoy every second with my newborn son
  2. I needed to EAT a lot to be able to have enough breast milk
  3. I had a tough labor and couldn’t even sit down properly, and I wanted everything to recover well.

I gave birth in August and by the time I knew it the holidays arrived. I said, “forget it I’m going to enjoy these tamales, and I shall start January.” You better believe it, because as soon as January 2nd came around my a** was on the grind. I told myself, if you want to achieve your goals you can’t expect to have the same habits. I completely cleaned out my pantry, my refrigerator, and went back to my pre-pregnancy habits. My mom went organic when I was 15 years old, so eating healthy with all the right ingredients wasn’t new to me. I had just forgotten about it for a year. I went from 150 to 130 pounds in 3 months. My secret: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FOODS YOU EAT. You are what you eat, and that means changing your mentality about food you eat. Just think about nourishing your body instead of depriving it.

Next, I started eating a plant based diet, but only 3 times a week. That meant no meat, no dairy, no eggs, basically a vegan diet, and that helped detox my body. It wasn’t too difficult because there are so many vegan options now days, and I just googled recipes online and modified them to my liking. I started exercising slowly with INSANITY. It’s a workout you do at home for 45 minutes, and it’s intense. I didn’t stick to that for too long because I realized I needed some type of exercise outside the house. That’s when I picked up Soul Cycle. Now I do cycling classes 2-3 times per week, and go on runs the other days. As soon as I started changing my diet, I lost ten pounds in the first month. I set small goals for myself, and that helped make my mission attainable. I would write down in a calendar the goal weight at the end of each month and hung it by my kitchen as a reminder.

As far as eating goes, I cut out red meat completely and minimized my coffee intake. I would drink the Yogi Blueberry Slim tea 2 times per day as a detox. The first 2 months, I had NO cheat meals. I didn’t want to tempt myself too early on in my journey. I kept all foods clean, simple and organic. I would drink lots of green juices, and of course lots of water!

What kept me motivated was the feeling of feeling sh*tty. There was one day where I was trying clothes on at the store and the jeans I tried on were a size 12. I just couldn’t believe it, I know size isn’t important, but that shook me to my core. I also didn’t fit into any of my clothes, so one day I emptied out my closet and threw all those clothes in the garage. I was depressed, I lacked energy, I wasn’t happy. I knew I needed to change for myself and for my family. My friends definitely encouraged me as well, and told me I could do it. They know the type of determined person I am, and when I say I will do something, I do it. All we have is our word. If I ever had any temptations I would just think back on that feeling, and I’d snap right out of it. If you’re determined you can do anything in life.

If you want to lose weight or change your eating habits, you can do it! The hardest part is starting, after that it becomes a habit. It not only helps us feel better, but it causes a trickle effect on the rest of your life.

Estaba deprimido, me faltaba energía, no estaba feliz.

Si quieres perder peso o cambiar tus hábitos alimenticios, ¡puedes hacerlo!

Hi there, I have been following you about 2 years. You are such an inspiration for me because of your love to fashion and also being a first time mom, I strongly identify with you. But anyways my questions are: are you still breastfeeding, if not how were you able to stop breastfeeding your baby? My son is 10 months and i only breast feed him. I really don’t know how to stop breastfeeding him, because it seems that you didn’t have much of a problem. I am asking for tips on how to stop breastfeeding so when I decide to stop breastfeeding I won’t feel overwhelmed.

Hi Claudia, what an amazing transformation yours has been! I am in awe of your journey and sure was a kick in the butt to get mine up and amp up my workout routine, I am not a mother yet. Unfortunately last year I lost my baby, and of course was left with a little bump that is costing me trouble to get rid of. After reading your blog and some of your helpful hints, I knew I had to reach out to you in regards to your vegan diet. I myself am a pescatarian, but just wanted to pick you brain a little in regards to what type of recipes you googled, and what was an example of your actual meal plan. Please if you don’t mind sharing id love to know! Also how did you decide on that type of tea? Again thank you for inspiring us women who are not mothers yet but someday hope to be.

Great story and thank you for sharing. I just had my second baby and have about 40lbs to lose. Question, did the plant based diet days affect your milk supply?

I enjoy seeing your pictures and fashion!
